Tips for Fresh, Long Lasting Summer Makeup

Fresher Long Lasting Summer Makeup

For those (myself included) who always moan about the cold and rainy English weather, well this week the said weather has made a 360 degree U-turn to laugh in our faces. Yesterday was the hottest summer day in a decade (35c in London). Plenty of sweltering sun we always complained we don’t get enough of. Well you know what they say, be careful what you wish for.

Although it was great that a ‘full blown’ summer had suddenly and unexpectedly graced us with its ever so powerful presence, I found myself literally unable to cope with the overpowering heat and humidity. So I thought in today’s post I would talk about how I keep my makeup on and melt-proof during hot summer days.

Of  course applying a good SPF is integral and should be the first thing you do before moving on to your makeup. I’m currently using Ultrasun Face High SPF 30 Anti-Aging formula, which is also catered for sensitive skin and is so lightweight and non sticky, always a plus in my book. Before applying makeup I always use a primer to prep my skin and to make foundation goes on nicer and lasting longer. I’ve been using Benefit Porefessional for years because it’s incredible at smoothing out your complexion, erasing any noticeable pores, adding longevity to your foundation, which is what you need most during the hot weather, and at a price that is still affordable.

When it comes to foundation, I personally think during the summer the lighter the better. I can’t imaging caking on heavy foundation to brave the glaring sun and have it melting off my face throughout the day. So keeping it barely there and light is key and at the moment I’m alternating between an all time favourite BareMinerals Complexion Rescue and Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation. Both have extra SPF 30, which is great to top up on your existing SPF, and both are super light weight and give you an amazing glow and dewy complexion. The BareMinerals one feels more comfortable and hydrating on the skin, whereas the texture of No Foundation Foundation takes a bit of getting used to but I still love it for injecting that boost of radiance. However if you want to opt for a proper foundation, the one I’m currently enjoying for the summer is Burberry Fresh Glow Luminious Foundation. It feels very lightweight, gives light to medium coverage, and as the name suggests, gives a beautiful luminious glow to your complexion.

Because I’ve been keeping my base light but I still want my makeup to look flawless, the next integral step for me is to add a setting power ‘that has some coverage’. Don’t worry, your makeup will not look cakey, as long as you don’t apply too much and always use a light hand. What this does is to set everything down, whilst adding extra coverage to make your complexion looking more even and flawless. My current favourites for this purpose are MAC Studio Fix and BareMinerals Original Powder Foundation, and I apply either with Bobbi Brown Sheer Powder brush or Sephora Pro Airbrush no. 55, both of which are perfect for a light dusting job.

As for eye makeup, the only set rule I have to keep everything looking fresh and long lasting amidst the heat and humidity is to always opt for waterproof mascara. The one I currently enjoy using at the moment is Maybeline Lash Sensational WP Mascara. It’s great for separating and fanning out your lashes, making them look full and fluttery.

Finally the last, and most important step is to seal everything in with a few spritzes of Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray. This is a miracle in a bottle; it keeps your makeup last ‘all day’ if not longer and nothing will budge it, not even the sweltering heat. It also freshens up your makeup so if you feel like everything is looking a bit dull or out of control during the day, a few spritzes will bring all back to live again.

This Week’s MOTD

This week I feel we have already fast-forward to summer; it has been incredibly sunny and warm. Not that I’m complaining, but when the weather gets this warm any kind of liquid foundations are out the door for me. I just can’t stand the tacky feeling on my face. So this week I’ve gone back to my beloved BareMinerals Original SPF15 foundation, which is perfect for giving a ‘barely there’ feeling that is much needed in the warming temperature. I’ve also eased myself back into using bronzer again after abandoning it for most of the winter. I know this may be the opposite of what most people do but I feel like wearing bronzer in the winter can look a bit unnatural and I don’t quite mind that my skin goes slightly paler to suit the cold winter climate. Anyway the bronzer I’ve been reaching for the most these days is the Body Shop Honey Bronzer just because it’s very very natural. It gives just enough warmth to your complexion without being too orange or too brown and I just dust it around the edge of my face in a C shape motion to warm up my skin. And since spring is all about the healthy glow I’ve been loving the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Dim Infusion for my cheek. It’s such a star product that serves so many purposes; a blusher, highlighter and skin enhancer all in one.

Pink seems to be a makeup trend this spring and this week I’ve dug out my MAC eyeshadow in Pink Venus that I bought whilst on a holiday last summer. It’s a gorgeous champagney pink with some specks of glitter that once applied just gives the loveliest pink shade that brightens up your eyes but very wearable at the same time. Unfortunately my camera is not fancy enough for the colour to show up properly (sorry!) but if you’re ever around a MAC counter it might be worth going in for a quick swatch.

Anastasia Brow Wiz has recently been my go to brow product just because it is so quick and easy to use and the very thin fine nib means you can really mimic each strand of hair to achieve a very natural look in no time at all. For mascara I’ve gone back YEARS to Maybelline Falsies Waterproof mascara. I don’t know why I ever stopped using this amazing product. It does everything to your lashes, it separates your lashes like no other mascaras, it gives amazing volume, it defines your lash line (something that not many mascaras do) and it adds reasonable length to your lashes. There’s a good reason why this mascara was unbeatable for years and I’m so glad I’ve rediscovered it again.

And quickly for lip I’ve been keeping it simple and just go for No.7 Precision Lips Pencil in Nude to both line and fill my lip. This is one of Lisa Eldridge‘s staple lip product and let me tell you, forget about Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk, or Rimmel’s East End Snob, or MAC Sublime Culture, at £6.75 and readily available in Boots, this gorgeous lip liner is as compatible to any of its hyped up counterparts (if not better!).

Favourite Foundations/Bases for Spring & Summer

Like everybody else, when it comes to Spring/Summer I can’t stand the feeling of heavy foundation and prefer to let my skin breath. My logic is that during the colder months, your skin needs extra barrier against the cold air and so heavier foundations give you that extra protective cushion. But once Spring and Summer arrive and it gets abit warmer it’s nice to finally let your skin breath and go abit bare (minus sun protection of course).

Here are my top picks in the foundation/skin base category during Spring and Summer months;

1) BareMinerals Complexion Rescue. My absolute favourite at the moment (if you’ve been following my blog for a while you’re probably tired of hearing me talking about this product by now. Apology!). Super lightweight and hydrating. Skin perfecting quality with stunning glowing/dewy finish. Personally I’ll be happy to just use this for the rest of the year.

2) Bourjois 123 Perfect CC Cream. I love the colour correcting quality of this cream. It really does correct and perfect your complexion and it gives a very smooth and almost matte finish. For a CC Cream it gives ‘amazing’ coverage and so I tend to reach for it on days that I want abit more coverage but don’t want the heavy feeling of a foundation on my skin.

3) YSL Le Tient Touche Eclat Foundation. For me this is one of the most comfortable liquid foundations to wear. It sits so comfortably on the skin and gives a very healthy dewy finish. I would say the coverage is light to medium and I tend to use a light layer of this and just add concealer to any problem areas if I need to. This is one of my staple foundations and I will definitely keep repurchasing it whenever I run out.

4) MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation. This is my go to foundation whenever I’m in a rush. It’s a foundation in pressed powder form and gives very decent coverage that is equal to any liquid foundations. Because it’s in a powder form it does feel lighter to the skin than regular liquid foundation. For me this is the most convenient, easy to use foundation ever; just a quick dusting with a big powder brush or a kubuki brush and you’re done. It’s absolutely perfect for days that you just want to get up and go.

5) BareMinerals Original SPF 15 Foundation. I save my all time favourite to last and it has to be the original BareMinerals foundation. Before I got into makeup I was only using this religiously every single days for years and it has done a great deal to my skin. This is a foundation in the form of loose mineral powder that has all kind of benefits and it is the only foundation that you can sleep with at night should you be too tired to remove it at the end of the day. So I also love this for when I go on a plane because I can still wear makeup and not having to worry about removing and reapplying or that it would break me out if I leave makeup on.

The way to apply this foundation can be a bit tricky if you are not used to loose powder foundation but basically I use my real technique buffing brush and just tap the powder on to the lid and swirl the brush around to gather the product. Then I tap any excess off and just start buffing it all over my face. You won’t feel ‘anything’ on your skin, it’s as if you are wearing no makeup at all, which I LOVE. But the coverage it gives is as good as any liquid foundations minus the feeling of cakiness that some foundations can give.
